To further challenge and further the concept of re-use. transformation I wrote a short text, to sketch out the idea of what a gift means in terms of architecture. In summary the text is a micro-manifesto exploring my idea of gifting as an architectural act, particularly in the context of working with a house that is to be demolished. I view giving a gift as an architectural intervention.. Gifting, in this sense, is seen as an altruistic exchange, fostering bonds between giver and recipient while avoiding burdens or implications of inadequacy.
I establish guidelines for gifting, emphasizing that a gift should be an addition, something excessive and unnecessary but thoughtful and appropriate. It should fulfill desires rather than needs, representing an act of care. The gift, once received, entangles me with the recipient, becoming part of their existence.
In the specific context of this house, I intend to leave behind an "excessive object" as a gift—something luxurious and unnecessary, yet transformative. This gift will create new spaces within the house, shaping its final days before demolition, and leaving behind a sense of fulfillment and connection.
